What exactly has been agreed?

Royale Union Saint-Gilloise signed an official agreement with South African giants Orlando Pirates on 5 July 2026. The partnership focuses on joint marketing, youth‑player exchanges and staging a friendly match ahead of the World Cup. Both clubs aim to broaden their fanbases and unlock new sponsorship opportunities.

Why does this matter for Union?

The Brussels side has surged in the Jupiler Pro League but still lacks a global stage. Linking with Orlando Pirates – a club boasting over 30 million followers across Africa – gives Union direct access to a massive new market. Moreover, Union’s academy can benefit from talent exchanges with the Pirates’ renowned youth system, accelerating the development of young Belgian prospects.

How will the collaboration work?

In the first phase Union will organise a two‑leg tour: in November 2026 Union travels to Johannesburg to face the Pirates, and in March 2027 the Pirates return to the Bosuilstadion. Joint merchandise drops are also planned, including a special edition Union shirt blending both clubs’ colours. Telecom and sports‑drink sponsors have already shown interest.

What does this mean for the fans?

Union supporters can look forward to more content and events. A fan meet‑and‑greet with Pirates star Moeneeb Joseph is scheduled for 12 November 2026 in Brussels. Additionally, Union fan‑club members will receive exclusive access to the livestream of the Johannesburg match, complete with behind‑the‑scenes footage. The club promises the partnership will strengthen ties between Belgium and South Africa and create fresh opportunities for players and fans alike.
